Joseph Kay graduated from the New England School of Acupuncture (NESA)  in 1983. He continued his studies at the Shang Hai College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1987, where he studied Chinese herbal medicine. 1990 was the first time that he traveled to Japan to study with master practitioners. 1990 was also the year Joseph became a Clean Needle Technique instructor for the Council of Colleges of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, and has taught every course in Massachusetts since that time. ( This course is required for all Acupuncturist in order to be licensed in Massachusetts) He has taught at the New England School of Acupuncture for more than 20 years and is the co-chair of the Japanese Acupuncture Styles Dept. He has studied with master practitioner Miki Shima in California, and in 2005 received a teaching certificate from the Japanese American Acupuncture Foundation.

 Joseph has maintained an Acupuncture practice in Cambridge, MA for more than 25 years. During this time he has been involved in research projects with Harvard Medical School's Osher Institute including studies on acute back pain, chronic back pain and RSI/Carpal tunnel. He participated in a research project at Massachusetts General Hospital examining Acupuncture for treatment of hypertension and has assisted in designing other research projects with NESA . Joseph is currently credentialed at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge to perform Acupuncture.
